We are people born of sound

...Michael Faraday gave a series of six lectures to schoolchildren at London's Royal Institution, over the Christmas holiday.  His topic?  "The Chemical History of a Candle".  They read just as well today as they must have once upon a time-- talk about a marvelous popular science speaker and writer.  (As someone said, he brings to mind Bill Nye meets Charles Dickens.)

There is no better, there is no more open door by which you can enter into the study of natural philosophy than by considering the physical phenomena of a candle.
