As promised, this is a soundtrack to accompany an ongoing "sword and sorcery" fill for a Watchmen AU prompt.  The original story, which you should definitely read, is located here.  (Thank you, Anonymous, for titillating my inner geek so effectively.)

I dug deep into my very, very eclectic music library and tried to locate stuff to accompany the story as it is unfolding sequentially; expect updates to the playlist as future chapters are posted.  I tried to pick the pieces mostly by "feel", as background music to the events and settings, but a couple of them have appropriate lyrics, too.

So...um...yeah.

Explanations and listing under the Grooveshark widget.

1. O Fortuna [Fortuna statu variabilis] - 11th-13th century, arranged/performed by Estampie (Ondas)

One of the most famous pieces from the Carmina Burana, a manuscript of medival Latin lyrics written between 1000-1250. (Carl Orff did a modern setting which gets waaay overused, IMO...this one is much better!)

O Fortuna
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.

O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing
and waning;
hateful life
first oppresses
and soothes,
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power,
it melts them like ice...

2. Forest of the Gods - Jo Hisaishi (soundtrack, Princess Mononoke)
3. Kodamas - Jo Hisaishi (soundtrack, Princess Mononoke)
4. Journey to the West - Jo Hisaishi (soundtrack, Princess Mononoke)

5. My Tuva - Kongar-ol Ondar (Back Tuva Future)

(Kongar-ol Ondar is a squillion kinds of awesome. If you have seen Genghis Blues, you know this. If not, go do something about the situation...I'll be waiting.)

6. Furies - Jo Hisaishi (soundtrack, Princess Mononoke)
7. Will to Live - Jo Hisaishi (soundtrack, Princess Mononoke)

8. Bai-Laa Taigam - Saimkho Namtchylak (In the Heart of Tuva)
9. Little Yurt on the Prairie - Kongar-ol Ondar (Back Tuva Future)

10. Marrakesh Night Market - Loreena McKennitt (The Mask & The Mirror)

The stories are woven
and fortunes are told
The truth is measured by the weight of your gold
The magic lies scattered
on rugs on the ground
Faith is conjured in the night market's sound

Would you like my mask?
would you like my mirror?
cries the man in the shadowing hood
You can look at yourself
you can look at each other
or you can look at the face, the face of your god

11. Incantation - Loreena McKennitt (An Ancient Muse)
12. Estampie VIII - medieval, performed by Estampie (Signum)

13. Ludus Danielis, Part III: Audite Principes (Chorus) - 13th century, performed by Estampie (Ludus Danielis)

[This one has a story.  When I was going through my music looking for something that sounded right for Adrian's palace, I thought this one might work, after a superficial listen...but when I took a closer look at it, headdesk time.
Why? It's from a medieval mystery play called the Ludus Danielis, or the "Play of Daniel"...and in this scene, the nobles of the court are summoning Daniel before King Darius. Hah!  So, of course, it made the final cut.]

14. The Garden of Zephirus
- Dead Can Dance (Aion)

15. Princess Mononoke Theme Song (Instrumental) - Jo Hisaishi (soundtrack, Princess Mononoke)

(Edited to add a couple songs for Chapters 14 and 15.)
